Understanding Q1 Journals with No APC
Q1 Journals are the journals that fall into the first quartile in a specific subject category according to a ranking system. They usually belong to the top 25% of journals in that particular category. Nevertheless, the quartile of a journal may vary from one subject category and ranking database to another.
A journal with zero APC means that the author can publish an article without having to pay any mandatory Article Processing Charge. However, this does not necessarily mean that all options for publishing in that journal will be free.
Three publishing models must be considered by researchers:
- Subscription journals: Researchers may be able to publish in such journals via the subscription model without any payment of the APC, but there could be other costs.
- Diamond open-access journals: Journals that offer open access to their publications without requiring payment of APCs from authors, depending on the funding model of the journal.
- Open-access journals with waivers: Certain journals offer waivers for APCs to certain authors. Waivers are always conditional and cannot be considered no-APC policies.
